To Whom It May Concern
Recently–and this is directly related to my iPod being stolen from my car–I discovered The Civil Wars. They are pretty cool. And one of their songs? Well, I swear everyone in the ALI community, especially those still waiting to be united with their much-wanted children, needs to hear it. So here it is.
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
Joy Williams and John Paul White
Why are you so far from me?
In my arms is where you ought to be
How long will you make me wait?
I don’t know much more I can take
I’ve missed you
But I haven’t met you
Oh how I want to
How I do
Slowly counting down the days
Till I finally know your name
The way your hand feels round my waist
The way you laugh, the way your kisses taste
I’ve missed you
But I haven’t met you
Oh how I want to
How I do
How I do
I’ve missed you
But I haven’t met you
Oh I’ve missed you
But I haven’t met you
Oh but I want to
Oh how I want to
Dear whoever you might be
I’m still waiting patiently

Wow.
That gave my chills.
Within a few days of meeting my husband (when I was 29) I was listening to a song I had heard a hundred times before by The National and the line “You know I dreamed about you for 29 years before I saw you, I missed you for 29 years” hit me hard. When our son was born, he said the same thing to him as HGB was born when *he* was 29.
The song above really captures all the good/bad/ugly TTC moments beautifully. Wow.
What a great song.
I love, love, love The Civil Wars. Joy William’s solo stuff is good too, although some of it is too religious for my taste.
thank you for sharing this beautiful song with me. I really love it.
I loved meeting you and only wish we’d had more time to speak to one another. I’ll be ever grateful to you and Isa for making time to see me on my trip.
xoxo
